William Edward 468 was born in South Repps, son of John Gotts & Priscilla Hardingham. He volunteered 22 Jan 1915. His Medal Card does not show any details of where he served, or even his Battalion number (actually 18506). The discharge record shows he was discharged on 11 May 1917 after a gunshot wound to his left foot. We can’t find any Service records, so we do not know where he served, or when exactly he was wounded. As he was discharged at Warley, in Essex, he presumably sustained the injury some time in 1916 or early 1917 in Egypt, and was eventually shipped home when it was clear he could not return to active service.

He is at the very left of the photo (as you look at it). He has a strange bandage attached to his left foot and a crutch to help him balance. Mother said he never really got over the war.
