BL India Office records show Thomas’s baptism in Cawnpore with a twin brother Richard. We don’t know if Richard survived, though there are none in 1841 or 1851 census. Their parents were likely to be William 1733 Gotts and Mary 1734 Wright.
William 1733 was in a private in 24th Dragoons, and married Mary Wright a widow, on 30th Sep 1811 at the Outstations, Bengal.
On 6 Feb 1814 there is a Charles Gotts baptised, b 22 Jan to William Gotts Private and his wife Mary at Outstations. On 3 Dec 1815 Charles Gotts, an infant was buried at Outstations. No parents named but his is Charles aged 10 months, son of Private William & Mary Wright.
On 19 May 1816 we have Thomas and Robert baptised, born 6 May, to Corporal William Gotts and Mary Wright. The images have been checked and these records are clearly not confused with Sergeant William Gotts in the 24th Foot who married Mary Flaherty. See tree 090-2 for their details.
William was known to be a plumber married to Mary Wright in 1819, when their daughter Harriett Day 1735 was baptised in Felmingham. He died in Thorpe Episcopi in 1829.
So Thomas's sister was Harriett Day Gotts bp 1819 in Lakenham, who then married Thomas Peter Curtis in Lakenham in 1840.
We don’t know when William signed up yet, that may be in his service records.
Thomas 1266, born abt 1816 in Bengal in the East Indies, appears in the 1851 census in West End St, Heigham, Norwich with his wife Mary 1267 Seeley and family. They married in 1839 in Norwich. Their family were born in Lakenham and include:
The family moved to Lewisham, where Mary died in 1862. Thomas married Thirza 3257 Burgeys in 1866. Click here for details.
